Video Remarks by
The Honourable Janice C. Filmon, C.M., O.M.
Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba
Thursday, May 6, 2021
Dear lovers of music and supporters of talent, welcome to an evening that will delight your ears, tickle your taste buds and deepen your passion for our community.
It is my pleasure to join you virtually from the traditional land of the Anishinabe and Metis people – in a province enriched by a large and vibrant indigenous community.
As honorary patron of the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg, I am proud to be associated with the oldest musical organization in our province.
Since 1894, the WMC has brought music to Manitobans through concerts. Since 1915, the club has supported the musical dreams of Manitobans through scholarships. And since 2005, through the McLellan Competition, the club has helped musicians reach the next level in their professional development.
As proud as I am of the past, I’m truly excited about the future.
Tonight, we will hear the future in the performances of the 2020 McLellan Competition finalists: soprano Sydney Clarke, cellist Juliana Morõz, and pianist Paul Williamson.
And we will have the opportunity to build Manitoba’s musical future through support for the WMC and its programs.
It takes years of practice and a special set of ears for a young musician to have a chance of reaching the level of tonight’s performers.
But it also takes money – whether that’s money for lessons or money to buy the time for all that study and practice.
The generosity of WMC donors made it possible this year for the club’s spring concerts to be available free online to all.
Your generosity in supporting this event and the WMC’s scholarship and other funds will ensure a future of beautiful sounds when we’re able to get together again in our favourite concert and recital halls to experience music in person.
Until then, I would like to thank you for your support and thank the members of the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg for keeping music alive and thriving in our province.
Thank You. Merci. Meegwich.
