Remarks by
The Honourable Janice Filmon, C.M., O.M.
Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba

Centennial Concert Hall
Tuesday, February 4, 2020 – 7:00 p.m.

Graduates, educators, builders of the present and the future of Manitoba – welcome to this celebration of accomplishment and promise. I acknowledged, you, the Graduates, but this event is just as much for your parent, guardians, families, all, who supported you. No one does anything alone.

We are gathered on Treaty One land, on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe and the homeland of the Metis people.

I acknowledge that the Anishinaabe and Metis people lived here long before this place became known as Winnipeg. And our province remains home to a large and vibrant Indigenous community.

As Manitobans we are fortunate to live in a province with a growing and highly diverse economy that supports excellent health, education and public services and a vibrant range of cultural and recreational options.

That’s a fancy way of saying Manitoba is a great place to live and there’s lots of great stuff to do here.

And tonight, we’re celebrating one of the key reasons why this province is such a great place to live.

The tremendous diversity of skills on display at a Red River College convocation is a great illustration of the strength and diversity of our province’s economy. A province with thriving industries including agriculture and food, aerospace and manufacturing, finance, IT, transportation, construction and infrastructure, arts and media and much, much more is sure to be a province with a great future.

Remember, an education is a very light piece of baggage to carry.

All this year we will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the entry of Manitoba into Confederation. We will be commemorating the generations who built this province as it exists today.

As Red River College grads, you have the skills to play a big part in building Manitoba’s future.

We need you, your leadership, ideas, heart, creativity and passion.

Congratulations on your achievement at RRC and may you give us all more to celebrate in the years ahead.

Thank you. Merci. Meegwich.
