Video Remarks by
The Honourable Janice C. Filmon, C.M., O.M.
Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba

Monday, May 31, 2021

Supporters of health, education and international co-operation, friends of the Jewish National Fund of Manitoba and Saskatchewan – it’s my absolute pleasure to be a part of tonight’s celebration recognizing the contributions of an outstanding Manitoban.

I am joining you virtually this evening from Government House, located in the heart of Winnipeg on the traditional land of the Anishinabe and Metis people – in a province enriched by a large and vibrant indigenous community.

The excellence, philanthropy and leadership celebrated each year at the Negev Gala are vital to the health and resilience of Canada, Israel and, indeed, every nation.
Tonight’s honouree, Dr. Ted Lyons has dedicated his career to the lives of others as a pioneer in ultrasound technology. Through his own work and through the work of the generations of doctors he’s taught, he has saved or enhanced countless lives.

His determination to have a positive impact on others doesn’t end there. Young people in the community of Sderot (pr: Darrow) will soon benefit from Dr. Lyons’ commitment to others when they take part in a healthy and safe environment at the Bervin JNF Canada House for Excellence.

That’s an example of one of the most important attributes of community leaders. They seek out new ways of solving problems, new people and communities to help and to inspire.

“That’s not in my job description” isn’t a phrase that comes easily to the lips of true community leaders.

We especially need that attribute in challenging times like this. So it’s fitting that the Jewish National Fund has worked out a way to move forward with this year’s gala virtually– even bringing together musical guest David Broza to play in Israel with members of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra right here.

What a wonderful symbol of international harmony. What an example of determination to surmount an obstacle.

Congratulations Dr. Lyons and congratulations to the JNF on continuing to lead by example. Enjoy this year’s Negev Gala and the knowledge that in supporting it, you’re making a real difference.

Thank you. Merci. Meegwich.
