Remarks by
The Honourable Janice Filmon, C.M., O.M.
Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba

Victoria Inn
Saturday, February 16, 2019 – 7:00 p.m.

Fellow Canadians, members of the Canadian Forces family, supporters of the Winnipeg Military Family Resource Centre, welcome to this gala evening of celebration and support.

We are gathered on Treaty One land, on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe and the homeland of the Metis people.

We are gathered as well in a city with a long tradition of close connections to Canada’s Armed Forces.

This is a place where Canada’s military is written into the street maps: Valour Road, Vimy Ridge Park, Andrew Mynarski School.

But more importantly, it’s written on our hearts. I saw and I heard last year during the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, that people in Manitoba are committed to remembering the bravery and sacrifice of veterans.

Tonight’s event is a reminder that in the present as well as in the past, in peace time as well as in the world wars of the 20th century, members of Canada’s Armed Forces experience unique pressures and challenges.

In turn, the challenges of military life create pressure on the family – whether those challenges are a consequence of a parent or spouse being far from home or of a family being uprooted to move to a new city far from their extended family.

I’ve had the good fortune to get to know members of all the military units stationed in Manitoba. And through them I have learned about how members of the military community support one another.

The Military Family Resource Centre plays a central role in the military community – providing support services and recreational opportunities for children and adults alike.

For those of us who are not part of the Canadian Forces family, supporting the Military Family Resource Centre is a way to show that we don’t just remember the contributions of the last century’s military members. Tonight we can tell today’s forces members and their families that we value what they do for Canada.

Thank you all for supporting the Yellow Ribbon Gala and thank you especially to all members of military families. Enjoy this evening of celebration and every program and event that it helps to support.

Thank you. Merci. Meegwich.
