Virtual Remarks by
The Honourable Janice C. Filmon, C.M., O.M.
Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba
Friends and fellow Manitobans, it’s a pleasure to join you electronically from the traditional land of the Anishinaabe and Metis people – in a province enriched by a large and vibrant Indigenous community.
Today, as we settle into a brand new year, I think we’re all looking forward to a time of renewed hope, optimism and community spirit.
I can’t think of a better way of beginning 2021 than with this presentation of the Lifesaving Society’s Rescue Awards.
We’ve just come through the season that shines a light every year on generosity, caring and spreading joy.
Many of us likely experienced that holiday tradition of getting teary-eyed in front of the television – watching George Bailey or Ebenezer Scrooge learn how many lives a single person can touch.
And we probably thought or heard somebody ask, “Why can’t the spirit of this season last all through the year?”
The stories of the rescuers we are recognizing today remind us that a spirit of caring can and does live on through winter, spring, summer and fall.
After all, what is more generous, caring and joyful than the gift of life itself?
The individuals honoured today used courage, quick-thinking and skill to perform rescues on our lakes and rivers.
They braved cold, stormy or turbulent water. They provided comfort and reassurance. And they stood up when circumstances called for them.
In the last year, we have all been shown more clearly than ever that all of our actions are interconnected.
We’ve seen that a healthy society is one where we look out for one another and take on personal responsibility for everybody’s safety.
The men and women being recognized today give us a model of what that kind of commitment looks like. Most of us will never be in a situation where we can save a life, but each of us can take inspiration from these courageous Manitobans.
By doing so, we will fulfill the promise that a new year brings and make this a year of caring, sharing and community spirit like no other.
Congratulations to all of today’s award recipients.
Thank you. Merci. Meegwich
