CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY

Staff, volunteers and supporters of the Legal Help Centre, welcome to this celebration of a decade of support for justice and fairness.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Government House – here in the heart of Winnipeg – on Treaty One land, the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, and the homeland of the Metis people.

Here at Government House – as throughout Manitoba – we strive for respectful partnerships with all the peoples of this province, as we search for collective healing and true reconciliation and honour this beautiful land together.

One way we form those respectful partnerships and honour this land is by ensuring that our principles of equality before the law are true in practice, in the daily reality of the people of our province.

So the work you do at the Legal Help Centre or the support you provide for the Legal Help Centre truly does help Manitoba to become the place we hope and dream it can be.

Building a better world requires the work of countless individuals who are willing to listen and learn and commit their time and talents to something larger than themselves.

In short, it takes leadership. It takes the kind of leadership demonstrated by the professionals, scholars and community members who founded the Legal Help Centre, and it takes the leadership you nurture in the students who gain essential experience working with your clients.

There’s a saying of the ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Xi – “when the true leader’s work is done, the people will say ‘we did it ourselves.’”

By empowering the people you serve and giving them the information to make decisions and advocate for themselves, you fulfill that vision of leadership.

Thanks to you, and others like you, Manitobans of all walks of life can look at areas of progress in social justice, economic opportunity and quality of life and say “we did it ourselves.”

Congratulations on this tenth anniversary and thank you for your contributions to our province and its people.
