CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY

Premier Goertzen, Kimberley, members of the Consular Corps, dear friends – it is my pleasure to welcome you to Government House – here in the heart of Winnipeg – on Treaty One land, the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, and the homeland of the Metis people.

Here at Government House – as throughout Manitoba – we strive for respectful partnerships with all the peoples of this province, as we search for collective healing and true reconciliation and honour this beautiful land together.

In that spirit or partnership and sharing, I’m so pleased to welcome the Manitoba’s Consular Corps to this historic residence.

As members of our province’s consular corps you dedicate your time and expertise to serving others – whether that means helping people apply for passports, bringing international investors together, co-ordinating official visits or responding to a world of questions and needs.

You provide citizens of the countries you represent with a friendly face and a sympathetic ear, as well as finely tuned judgement.

For all the people of Manitoba, you help us stay open to a great big world of opportunities, ideas and experiences.

Over the last year and a half, as our wings have been temporarily clipped, we’ve all felt how important it is to remain connected to the world beyond our borders.

We may live in the heart of North America – but the world lives in our hearts.

The leadership you provide helps to keep us all a part of a global community of seven billion people, sharing in each other’s dreams for a better world and working to bring those dreams to reality.

For some of you, being part of Manitoba’s Consular Corps is part of a lifelong career path in diplomacy. For many others, this is a foray into a different field to add to the experience you’ve gained in your chosen career. But for all you, your service draws on essential leadership skills of listening, empathizing, seeing solutions and taking actions.

Our world and this province benefit from your choice to use those skills here and in this capacity. Enjoy this evening in fascinating and friendly company with other global citizens.

Thank you.
