Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba
August 6-8, 2021
Welcome friends around the globe to a world of beauty, creativity and an energy that will jump through your screen and get you moving.
Welcome to the Folklorama Fusion Festival!
It is my pleasure to join you virtually from Government House, here in the heart of Winnipeg on the traditional land of the Anishinabe and Metis people – in a province enriched by a large and vibrant indigenous community.
What started out as a one-time festival to celebrate Manitoba’s centennial, fifty one years later, Folklorama has become the largest and longest running multi-cultural festival of its kind in the world.
Every August, Folklorama gives visitors the opportunity to learn and celebrate the diversity of peoples and cultures in a province where people have come together for thousands of years.
Seeds of cultures from around the world have found fertile ground in Manitoba to blossom beautifully and grow strong.
They do so because they are lovingly nurtured by thousands of devoted and diligent gardeners – the volunteers, performers, organizers and supporters of Folklorama.
Members of the Folklorama family, with their love for cultural expression and community, continue to provide an impressive showcase of the beautiful tapestry of our province, remarkable volunteer strength, and outstanding hospitality, making this beloved festival a magnet for both local and international visitors.
Folklorama truly is one big multi-cultural family. Generations of young people have been introduced to the joys of giving back to the community through their involvement with this festival.
Young children develop the sense of accomplishment and pride from perfecting their part and performing for an appreciative audience. They see parents or older siblings giving freely of their time and energy to create a memorable experience for all.
This summer, the people of Folklorama have drawn on all those talents and all that experience to create a fabulous virtual festival to ensure we can keep celebrating.
Over the next three magical evenings, the music, dance, stories and traditions of the world will come to life in the comfort of your home. No passport required!
You will travel around the world and be swept away by the artistry, passion and sheer joy of the performers who remind us of the many ways cultural diversity enhances the quality of life for all us.
Turn up the volume, and get ready, tonight’s fabulous show is about to begin.
Thank you Merci Meegwich
