The Honourable Janice Filmon, C.M., O.M.
Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba
July 30-August 2, 2021
Bitaemo and welcome to Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival.
It is my pleasure to join you virtually from Government House, located in the heart of Winnipeg on the traditional land of the Anishinabe and Metis people – in a province enriched by a large and vibrant indigenous community.
This virtual version of one of the highlights of a Manitoba summer is many things. It is a labour of love by organizers who have performed feats of technological wizardry to make this possible. It is a showcase for the soul-stirring beauty of Ukrainian music, dance, art and culture.
As always, it is a tribute to the courage, grit and resilience of generations of Ukrainian Canadians who built homes and communities in Manitoba and across Canada.
In normal circumstances, walking through the festival site at Selo Ukraina gives us an opportunity to imagine the dedication it required to establish communities in a new land and to maintain and nourish a cultural identity many generations later.
We can imagine the challenges the first waves of Ukrainian Canadians faced – the floods and fires and early frosts. And then looking around at the scene of beauty and celebration at the festival, we can see how the seeds of community they planted have blossomed beautifully.
The establishment and growth of Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival is a result of the leadership of generations of women and men who have given their time and energy to make great things happen.
Like so many essential institutions, services and creations, this festival exists because individuals had a dream, inspired others with that dream and did the hard work to make it a reality.
That dream inspires hundreds of volunteers, in Dauphin and in the cultural and performing arts groups that travel to the festival, to give their time to create something of lasting value.
And it has inspired them and the performers featured in this virtual festival to provide an online experience that is the next best thing to enjoying the festival in person.
Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival was created with an eye to the future, and with an eye to the future, we can see many more years of excitement, celebration and artistry.
Enjoy this virtual reminder of all that this festival is and will be again soon.
Thank you. Merci. Meegwich.
