The Honourable Janice Filmon, C.M., O.M.
Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba
Friday, July 31, 2020 – 7:00 p.m.
Lovers of colour and artistry, music and memories – it’s time to take a virtual trip to the beautiful home of Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival.
Every summer for 55 years, lovers of Ukrainian history and culture have gathered in Dauphin to celebrate the passion, creativity, pride and resilience of Canada’s Ukrainian community.
Those sentiments are as powerful as ever this year, even if the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we celebrate.
We can’t get together in the beautiful Riding Mountain country at Selo Ukraina for the 55th annual running of the festival but we can enjoy this evening’s taste of the festival, featuring many of the performers who would have wowed us in person.
The traditions and art forms of Canada’s Ukrainian community have flourished in Manitoba – and across our country – since the first wave of Ukrainian immigrants arrived in a faraway land in 1891.
Next year, when we are again able to immerse ourselves in those traditions in person, they will again inspire and delight us. Until then, stay safe and enjoy this virtual sampling of Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival.
