Friends, Manitobans, members of a community of caring and compassion, it’s a pleasure to join you electronically as you celebrate hope and faith in a year when we need them both.
This year, as never before, we have been given a demonstration of the basic human need for friendship and social interaction.
We have been shown more clearly than ever before that we are all in this together, that misfortune for one is misfortune for all.
And we have been part of a fascinating real-time social experiment on the value of large-scale co-operation. We have seen this spring and summer we can successfully address big, intractable problems and save lives by bringing people together to support a common cause.
So what perfect timing this is for the opening of the Buhler Centre at Siloam Mission.
Given the covid-19 pandemic – and the threat it poses to marginalized people – the Buhler Centre is more important now than its most fervent supporter could have imagined a few years ago. Not only does this increase Siloam Mission’s bed capacity, it provides transitional support to help men and women get back to regular housing.
This project also shows us what can happen when community leaders like Bonnie and John Buhler are joined by all levels of government, other donors, corporate supporters and volunteers.
Through personal leadership, community spirit and co-operation, we can make progress on complex problems as new as a freshly discovered virus and as timeless as the need for safe and healthy shelter.
Thank you Bonnie and John for your amazing generosity and to ALL of the supporters, staff, volunteers and clients of Siloam Mission for providing this lesson in faith, hope and dedication to community.
