Friends, fellow Manitobans, welcome to this celebration of an outstanding organization dedicated to a great cause.

It is my special pleasure to welcome you today to Government House – here on Treaty One land, the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, and the homeland of the Metis people. We strive for respectful partnerships with all the peoples of this province, as we search for collective healing and true reconciliation and honour this beautiful land together.

We do that in part by working together to build a province that provides opportunities for all to learn, to grow and to care for others.

We do that by giving all Manitobans a chance to achieve their goals and share their gifts with loved ones and with the world at large.

We do that by allowing everybody to feel what it feels like to take charge – of their life, of their future, of their dreams.

For more than 25 years, Taking Charge has been helping women and single parents enhance their education and job skills, find emotional support, build healthy families and succeed in their career goals.

We had intended to celebrate during the actual 25th anniversary of this wonderful organization, but of course the world had other plans.

But there isn’t really any magic in numbers divisible by five. The magic is in the connections your staff and clients make. And it’s in the transformations your clients make in their lives through the opportunities you make possible.

We do sometimes get so caught up with numbers – years of service, numbers of clients, number of programs – that we overlook that unique nature of each moment, each interaction between two living souls.

That spark that ignites in somebody’s mind when they’ve learned something new, that warmth that spreads in somebody’s heart when they feel heard, understood, appreciated – each of those is a unique, one-time connection that can, in a moment, change a life or change the world.

And so we celebrate an uncounted and uncountable number of those moments spread over the last 27 years.

As staff, volunteers and supporters of Taking Charge, you have made this a better province and a better world, one moment at a time.

Thank you and may you have many magic moments to come.
