Members and friends of Manitoba’s theatre community – tonight we recognize lives dedicated to an ancient and powerful magic.

It is my pleasure to join you from Government House – located in the heart of Winnipeg – on Treaty One land, the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, and the homeland of the Metis people. We strive for respectful partnerships with all the peoples of this province, as we search for collective healing and true reconciliation and honour this beautiful land together.

Generations of Manitobans have been brought together by the theatre artists of this city.

They’ve entered a darkened room as strangers and been transformed into a collective community travelling through time and space – laughing, sighing, gasping and experiencing new understandings together.

This alchemy is the work of actors, directors and playwrights, sound and lighting designers, set designers and builders, composers and musicians, stage managers, costume designers and the myriad of others who keep theatre companies alive and thriving.

Their work in turn is made possible by the love of those theatre angels who bestow their gifts of time, expertise and financial support to keep the footlights on.

And for many it is inspired by the passionate theatre educators who introduced them to the transformative experience of enjoying or creating theatre.

These awards also salute the efforts of the theatre companies that adapted to public health restrictions with video and online productions. Their innovation and tenacity over the last year provided Manitobans with a fix of laughter, empathy and catharsis.

As we cautiously await the re-opening of Winnipeg’s theatre doors and the return of that unique, in-person shared experience, these awards give us the opportunity to acknowledge the dedication, creativity and talents of a theatre community that cherishes its deep roots and its openness and diversity.

Congratulations to all of those whose contributions are recognized tonight. Thank you for the gifts you have brought to this city and province.
