2019 NEGEV GALA

Remarks by
The Honourable Janice Filmon, C.M., O.M.
Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba

Centennial Concert Hall
Monday, May 27, 2019 – 7:00 p.m.

Dear friends and fellow Manitobans, supporters of the Jewish National Fund and admirers of one of Canada’s cultural luminaries – it’s a pleasure to join you for the 2019 Negev Gala.

I begin by acknowledging that the Anishinaabe and Metis people lived here long before this place became Winnipeg. This city remains home to the largest Indigenous community in Canada.

As Manitobans, we share in many blessings. One is the strong sense of community – the connections people here feel with one another. Another is the creative, active and diverse arts community.

Of course, those two are very closely intertwined – because our theatre companies, music and dance organizations, art galleries and other pillars of our arts sector do so much to bring us together.

Tonight, it’s a pleasure to join you in honouring a man who has done so much for thirty years to make all of that happen.

We will hear more shortly about Steven Schipper’s many artistic accomplishments and about his managerial success at the helm of the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre.

The details are impressive: the Canadian and world premieres, the new Manitoba plays commissioned, the growth in subscribers, the high profile gained by Manitoba’s theatre community through his work.

But what’s harder to measure is the result of his leadership: how many theatre careers he has nurtured, the growing confidence of actors, directors and playwrights here in Manitoba to follow their inspiration, and the magic moments of audience members who have seen the world anew on the RMTC’s stages.

Great leaders don’t just get results that can be attributed to them. They create the conditions that will allow for others to succeed.

For thirty years, on stages in Winnipeg, across Canada and around the world, the impact of Stephen’s leadership has been felt, wherever those who have been encouraged and inspired by him have woven their magic spell.

Tonight, the impact of his great career will reach out to Beit Halochem Rehabilitation Centre in Israel thanks to the generosity of all of you.

Thank you Stephen Schipper for your leadership and for enhancing the lives of so many people here and around the world.

Merci. Meegwich.
