RED RIVER COLLEGE WINTER CONVOCATION

Remarks by
The Honourable Janice Filmon, C.M., O.M.
Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba

Centennial Concert Hall
Monday, February 5, 2018 – 7:00 p.m.

Graduates, educators, builders and seekers of opportunity and members of the Red River College extended family – it’s a pleasure to join you for this celebration of achievement.

We are gathered on Treaty One land, on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe and the homeland of the Metis people.

We’re gathered here today as family, friends and well-wishers of a diverse group of graduates who are setting out into the world with the skills our economy and our society need.

Some of the graduates we celebrate tonight will put their skills and ingenuity to work in sectors like manufacturing, transportation and construction.

Others will use their knowledge and dedication to help others in the health, education and social service sectors.

The diversity of opportunities open to Red River College graduates reminds us that Manitoba has the most diverse economy in Canada. We have built our province on a foundation of many industries that require workers with many different kinds of skills.

That diversity also reflects an important fact about life and about community.

A successful community requires a wide array of skills and knowledge. Thousands and thousands of different kinds of expertise are needed to make a city, a province or a nation thrive.

So take inspiration in the fact that you are all needed.

In each life – on the job, in the community, at home – there are opportunities to be indispensable. And that warm feeling when you’ve made a difference at work is very similar to the one you get volunteering in the community, or just being a supportive friend or neighbor.

If we wish to live in a prosperous, healthy, vibrant and just community we all depend on each other.
As you build on your Red River College education through your experiences to come, we’re depending on you to continue making our province a wonderful place to live.

Congratulations! Thank you, merci, meegwich.
