The Honourable Janice Filmon, C.M., O.M.
Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba
303 Stanley Street
Friday, October 6, 2017 – 11:00 a.m.
Leaders and visionaries, friends and supporters of Siloam Mission and its community, it is a pure pleasure for me to join you in opening this new place of welcome, friendship and caring.
We are gathered on Treaty One land, on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe and the homeland of the Metis people.
Today, we are meeting in the heart of a great city to inaugurate this new drop-in centre and dining area. This new space is at the heart of Siloam Mission’s commitment to the people of this community.
It has come about because many people here in Manitoba gave with their hearts to support the Siloam Mission’s Make Room capital campaign, and because many give their time and effort to keep this vital organization alive.
Support from individual philanthropists and organizations, as well as from various levels of government, has helped Siloam Mission to grow and to provide a wide array of services over the last thirty years.
Though Siloam Mission offers many different kinds of services, at its heart, this organization is about bringing people together in community.
Nothing brings community together more profoundly than the act of breaking bread.
This weekend, across Manitoba and across Canada, families and friends will gather for a special meal and will give thanks for the good things in life.
They will express thanks for their meals, their homes, for togetherness and love, for the opportunities made possible by living in our wonderful country.
Many will think of ways in which they can truly express the gratitude they feel – by sharing some of their good fortune with others, by offering some of their time and talents, by being good neighbours.
Those who have made this drop-in centre possible – and indeed all of those who have supported Siloam Mission for these thirty years – have expressed their thanks in the most eloquent way possible.
Thank you for giving Manitobans something else to be thankful for, and thank you for inspiring others to work for a more caring and supportive community.
To all who will gather in this new drop-in centre, I wish you health and happiness and good fellowship. Happy Thanksgiving.
