Builders of teams, bridges and communities; givers of time, resources and insights; members and friends of the Association of Fundraising Professionals – it’s a pleasure to join you today for a celebration that is close to my heart.

We are gathered on Treaty One land, on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe and the homeland of the Metis people.

We’re coming together near the end of a year when we have been commemorating the 150th anniversary of Confederation and thinking about what it means to build a country worthy of this beautiful, bountiful land.

This year, as I have been visiting communities large and small, taking part in festivals and celebrations, and applauding at performances and awards ceremonies, I have been thinking of the many Manitobans who commit themselves to creating that Canada.

Some of them found great public institutions. Others find the time for a volunteer shift at the local community centre. And they do everything in between.

Some of them devote large amounts of their time and energy for years and decades to the public good.

Those are the people we celebrate today – outstanding philanthropists and volunteers, fundraising professionals, inspiring young people with careers in volunteering ahead of them, and the leaders who dedicate their organizations to philanthropy.

As somebody who has been involved in the philanthropic and volunteer community for many years, I know how personally rewarding it is to be part of something that touches so many lives.

Today’s award recipients have already felt the great satisfaction of seeing their time and effort and dedication changing the world for the better.

Today we will put into the words, gratitude of Canadians who have seen and felt the power of your commitment to a better province, country and world.

Thank you for giving our hearts that much more reason to glow. Merci. Meegwich.
