LEADERSHIP WINNIPEG

Remarks by
The Honourable Janice Filmon, C.M., O.M.
Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba

Government House
Friday, October 27, 2017 – 9:00 a.m.

Go-getters, self-starters and idea-generators; volunteers, leaders and mentors; participants in and friends of Leadership Winnipeg – welcome to Government House and this exciting stop on your learning journey around our city.

We are gathered here on Treaty One territory, on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabe and the homeland of the Métis people.

Today we’ve gathered to continue your year-long exploration of community leadership. You will meet men and women who can share with you their thoughts and experiences on community and public service.

I suspect that you will leave at the end of the day with your commitment strengthened and your desire to serve your community even more powerful.

Since this is still quite early in your Leadership Winnipeg year, many of you may still be wondering just what you’ve got yourself into.

You are certainly in for a busy time, between these monthly learning sessions, the additional study and work you will do this year, and the second year of hands-on experience through the Board Connect program.

But as you learn more about the community services and volunteer organizations that make this city and this province tick, you will find yourself even more certain that getting involved with Leadership Winnipeg was one of the smartest decisions you’ve ever made.

You will meet inspiring people. You will discover new avenues for your passion and your talents. You will find ways of leaving a mark on Winnipeg and on Manitoba.

In my years of involvement in community organizations, I have had the chance to discover new aspects of the human experience and encounter more sides of the human spirit in all its diversity.

For every hour I have put into these organizations, I have felt that these experiences have provided immeasurable personal and emotional rewards.

In order to be selected for this program, each of you already had a track record of community involvement and volunteering. You already know that many of the greatest rewards in life are priceless. You already know that giving enriches the giver in ways that cannot be counted in any currency.

Your Leadership Winnipeg experience will inspire you to set your public service sights higher, to challenge yourself to make a bigger impact. And in the process to learn and grow – as a professional and as a human being.

I’m delighted to welcome you to Government House for this session and to wish you a productive, inspiring and enlightening day.

Thank you. Merci. Meegwich.
