EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES EXEMPLARY SERVICE MEDAL CEREMONY

Remarks by
The Honourable Janice Filmon, C.M., O.M.
Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba

Government House
Tuesday, October 17, 2017 – 5:00 p.m.

Fellow Manitobans, savers of lives, models of care and professionalism, welcome to Government House and this celebration of exemplary service to the public.

We are gathered here on Treaty One territory, on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabe and the homeland of the Métis people.

We are meeting tonight in a building that has been a landmark of this province for more than 130 years – in a historic residence that has hosted kings and queens, prime ministers and foreign heads of state.

But Government House is not just the residence of Manitoba’s Lieutenant Governors, nor is it just a place for holding receptions for visiting dignitaries.

This building is a gathering place for Manitobans. It’s a place where we celebrate the spirit of community and care that has built a province of vibrant cities and towns and villages. It’s a place where we celebrate the people who make Manitoba a wonderful place to live.

No Manitobans better represent that spirit than tonight’s award recipients.

As recipients of the Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Service Medal, these individuals have performed their duties with thoroughness, professionalism, compassion and dedication for at least 20 years.

They have dedicated their careers to helping their fellow human beings at their most vulnerable, time, to providing care when it is needed most urgently, to serving others day and night, in sunshine, rain and snow.

These awards are administered by the Chancellery of Honours, a branch of the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General.

As such, they come with the thanks and recognition of a grateful nation.

Building a great nation that sprawls across half a continent requires the long-term commitment of countless men and women – in cities and towns and rural communities, across the forests and prairies and hills and coastlines.

It requires people like you – this year’s recipients of these Exemplary Service Medals.

As Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba, I thank you for your service and I wish you well as you continue to contribute to a healthy, safe and vibrant Manitoba and Canada.

Thank you. Merci. Meegwich.
