The Honourable Janice Filmon, C.M., O.M.
Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba
Metropolitan Entertainment Centre
Tuesday, October 24, 2017 – 6:00 p.m.
Explorers and entrepreneurs, benefactors and builders, friends and fans of the passionate youth of Canada and the world, it’s a pleasure to join you tonight to celebrate the spirit of We Day.
We are gathered on Treaty One land, on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe and the homeland of the Metis people.
We’re meeting in the capital of a province whose very name contains the Cree and Anishinaabe word for “spirit.”
We are celebrating the powerful spirit of hope and commitment that makes We Day possible and that tomorrow will be a palpable presence emanating from just across the street.
Thanks to your support, some 16,000 young people will come together tomorrow to be inspired and to dedicate themselves to working together for a better world.
They will hear speakers who will urge them to take action right in their communities and to set their sights on the stars. And they will join in this with other young people from across Canada, the United States and around the world.
We Day participants will benefit in countless ways from their involvement – and from your support for this movement.
They will become more inspired in their education and their community activities. They will develop new social and organizational skills. They will make valuable connections to other people and their world.
The world will benefit from the millions of volunteer hours they put in as part of their We Day commitment. The world will benefit exponentially more from the lifelong commitment to volunteering and to leadership that they will make.
As the years go by, we will see some of them taking your place – as the supporters of movements like We Day and as the creators, advocates and mentors who inspire the young people of the future.
To all of the people who make tomorrow possible, I thank you for making the move from “me to we” in your own life and for helping today’s youth do the same.
Thank you. Merci. Meegwich.
