Sunday, August 13, 2017 – 2:00 p.m.

Your Excellency, special guests, athletes, coaches fans of sport and youth! Bonjour Canada! Have you had a good time at the 2017 Canada Games?

We are gathered here on Treaty One territory, on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabe and the homeland of the Métis people.

We’re gathered to celebrate two weeks of sweat and sore muscles, two weeks of cheers and tears, two weeks of dreaming and achieving.

We’ve seen wonderful performances on the track, on and in the water, on grass, dirt and sand, in the ring, on the court and everywhere the nearly 4,000 athletes poured their hearts and souls into their events. We’ve danced and sung along to wonderful performances at the Canada Games Festival at the Forks.

The organizers of these games promised “The Hottest Summer in Half a Century.” And for a few days there, “hot” was not just a figure of speech.

Today, though, we’re going to heat things up even more with a party for Canada’s young athletes, their families, coaches, and fans – and the 6,500 volunteers who have a burning passion for sport, for community and for Canada.

Please, I ask now for Mayor Brian Bowman to proceed with the passing of the flag to our friends in Red Deer, Alberta.
