Thursday, September 21, 2017 – 7:30 p.m.

Creators, patrons and lovers of art, friends of the Buhler Gallery and the St. Boniface General Hospital, it’s a pleasure to join you in celebrating ten years of bringing beauty and contemplation to those who need it the most.

We are gathered here on Treaty One territory, on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabe and the homeland of the Métis people.

We’ve come together to celebrate a unique art gallery that has brought comfort and time for reflection to thousands of patients, staff and visitors at this busy hospital.

The Buhler Gallery is a product of great generosity of spirit – the generosity of John and Bonnie Buhler who made it possible, that of the donors of more than 300 artworks in the permanent collection and that of all the supporters and volunteers who have helped this gallery enhance life at this hospital.

Hospitals can be frightening and stressful places. Whether you are there as a patient or to visit a loved one or to provide care, spending time in a hospital can be taxing for the mind, body and spirit.

This quiet place of beauty and creativity is a refuge and a place to re-energize. It connects talented artists from our community and across Canada with an audience in need of healing (possibly) and of the power of art.

This creative coming together of two seemingly separate worlds – art and health care – is a wonderful example of what we all love about Winnipeg and Manitoba.

We’re a province of builders and connectors, a place where people bring their own special skills and talents to create something greater than any one person can build alone.

In this year when we commemorate the 150th anniversary of Confederation, it’s wonderful to celebrate the 10th anniversary of an art gallery. The Buhler Gallery shows us that Canadians are still coming together to create great things. This is a partnership worth celebrating!

Congratulations and thank you. Merci. Meegwich.
