Remarks by
The Honourable Janice Filmon, C.M., O.M.
Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba

Veterans’ Memorial Park, Brandon
Wednesday, September 27, 2017 – 1:30 p.m.

Friends, Manitobans, builders and sustainers of community spirit – it’s a pleasure to join you on this beautiful fall afternoon for this celebration of natural beauty and faith in the future.

We are gathered here on Treaty Two territory, on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabe, Cree and Oji-Cree and Dakota peoples, and the homeland of the Métis.

This year, as we have been commemorating Canada’s 150th anniversary, we have been reflecting on the values our country stands for and on the Canadians who made our country what it is today.

We have also had ample occasion to reflect on the men and women who have defended our country and its values.

Earlier this year, during the one hundredth anniversary of the battle of Vimy Ridge, and then this summer during the 75th anniversary of the raid on Dieppe, Canadians have been reminded of the courage and sacrifice of those who serve and have served this great country.

This fall, when we gather on Remembrance Day, as we have for nearly a century, we will renew our vow as a nation, to always remember our veterans.

The development of Veterans Memorial Park, the product of a community effort by the people of Brandon, shows us that that vow is indeed being honoured.

This park serves as a reminder for future generations of the patriotism and valour of those who came before, and it will inspire others to dedicate themselves to Canada and its values.

It is my pleasure to provide this gift of ten Regal Celebration maple trees to this park, and the City of Brandon. These trees will provide shade and shelter to those future generations. This Manitoba-produced maple tree has been bred to display the beautiful red leaf that is a symbol of our country, while being hardy enough to thrive in our prairie climate.

I can think of no better place for these trees to grow strong and free than right here. May you visit them often in good health and in a spirit of reflection and peace.

Thank you. Merci. Meegwich.
